A dramatic Khouma Babacar goal a minute before the end of extra-time was enough for Fiorentina to overcome Empoli to advance through to the fourth round of the Coppa Italia. The Viola, who recorded only their second win of the Serie A season against Bari on Saturday were hoping to make to the next round of the cup in the eagerly anticipated Tuscan Derby. Empoli went into the game as the only unbeaten team in Serie B, only conceding six goals this season. Having thrashed Reggiana 4-1 in the last round, Alfredo Aglietti's side were hopeful of causing a major upset at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. But Senegalese teenage striker Babacar struck a decisive blow in the 119th minute to break their Serie B opponents hearts. Fiorentina will face the winners of the Frosinone-Reggina tie on Wednesday evening.
Sinisa Mihajlovic's side join Genoa in the next round of the competition after the Rossoblu overcame Grosseto 2-1 thanks to another goal in the final minute of extra-time. Gianluca Freddi had given the second division outfit the lead only for striker Luca Toni to level in the 82nd minute before the winner deep into stoppage time.
