Jankovic Slumps In Doha

Jankovic slumps in Doha
Jankovic: Broken five times

Second seed Vera Zvonareva got her WTA Championships campaign off to a winning start with a 6-3 6-0 victory over an ailing Jelena Jankovic. The sixth-ranked Serbian has been troubled by a sinus problem in the past week and was clearly out of sorts at the season-ending tournament in Doha.

Zvonareva broke early in the first set of the White Group match and although Jankovic saved numerous break points in the seventh game, the Russian broke her resistance two games later to clinch the set. Zvonareva faced a break point in the opening game of the second set but she recovered to hold and when she broke for a third time in the next Jankovic capitulated. Jankovic's defeat, who as late as 2008 held the number one spot, continues a run of poor form. She was beaten at this month's Kremlin Cup by No. 248 Zarina Diyas.
